Bregman's Debut, Cubs land Chapman

Here's a rundown of yesterday's top stories:

Bregman's Debut

Last week, I wrote an article about the Astros pileup of talent at third base. It happened a bit earlier than I predicted, but regardless, it has happened; Alex Bregman has been called to the big leagues. The second overall pick of the 2015 draft, Houstonians have been eagerly awaiting Bregman's arrival for some time now. He made his debut last night against the Yankees, starting at third and batting sixth. He received a standing ovation before even seeing a pitch.

In his first at bat, Bregman stepped in with the bases loaded and nearly dropped a grand slam.

Could have been legendary. Bregman didn't have a great debut, going 0-4 with two strikeouts. Valbuena had a good night, starting at first and going 3 for 3. He will need to keep up his production to maintain playing time alongside Bregman. It's expected Bregman will start at left field and DH over the next two games.

Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs

The Yankees traded their flame throwing closer Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs yesterday, receiving four young prospects in return. The Cubs bullpen was already pretty solid, with 6 of their 8 relievers possessing sub 3.00 ERA's. But Chapman provides another level of production, a shut down force in the ninth who can finish off close games. The Cubs are the best team in the league right now, and if they were ever going to go out and get a big name pitcher now would be the time. Fans in Chicago are hoping Chapman can propel them to the world series, where they will look to win their first title since 1908.

It appears the Yankees have taken the advice of my friend Chris and become sellers at the deadline. It's a questionable decision as the club is only 4.5 games back of the wild card. They've also gotten hot lately, winning 7 of their last 9. The Yanks will be kicking themselves if they have a strong August and find themselves contending down the stretch.

The gem of the trade for the Yankees is Gleyber Torres, a 19 year old shortstop who is now their top ranked prospect.
